Feeding Birds

There are many ways to encourage birds into your garden, providing regular food and water, a cosy shelter, and careful planting can have a huge impact on the numbers and species found. Food can be provided naturally by planting trees, shrubs, hedgerows and wildflowers. Differerent birds have different tastes and feed in different ways.

Seeds, like sunflower hearts and various seed mixes will attract a number of species into your garden. Sultanas (first soaked in water) will attract ground feeding birds such as Blackbirds. Some kitchen scraps can be fed to birds, such as bread, cheese or apple, however salty food scraps should be avoided. Fat smeared into tree cracks will encourage Treecreepers, Nuthatches and Woodpeakers and live foods such as mealworms and waxworms will encourage Robins, Tits and even Wrens.
