At around 11am on Thursday 7th September we learnt that the visit we had been hoping for from Cornish
MP George Eustice was going ahead the following day and that we would be joined by the
Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State at Defra. As you can imagine we were thrown into a state of 'tidying up' that I'm sure any other small business could identify with!
It was good to show Mr Eustice and Mr Gove around our Perranporth premises and to talk to them about solitary bees and how they nest and why they are so important. They both seemed impressed by the bee brick and recognised the potential it has to be used across the country to create further habitat for our pollinators.
We recognise that Michael Gove polarises opinion but if we want to look after our most important customer, the bees, then we need people in positions of power and influence to back us and help us to change legislation and move action for pollinators up the agenda.
We left the meeting with a promise to talk further about ways in which we can work with the Bee department of Defra on it's
pollinator plan, to help highlight the plight of solitary bees and the simplicity of the bee brick in being part of the solution to habitat loss and a way of introducing biodiversity within the high number of new buildings being planned.
As Chris Hines, founder of SAS said, "Every house built without a bee brick is a missed opportunity". We strongly hope that we can work with Michael Gove and the Conservative government to ensure we don't miss this opportunity with the thousands of houses due to be built in the UK.
