Benefits of Gardening & Outdoor Living

How gardening can help you feel good

While a bit of weeding and pruning might not seem like the most energetic of activities, studies show that gardening goes beyond providing a good workout, as it can also be therapeutic and reduce anxiety as well as physical pain. Studies show that light exercise like gardening, in combination with spending time outdoors being creative, can improve mood and self-esteem, whilst burning calories too. Two gardens at the 2018 Chelsea Flower Show were pledged to NHS patients in recognition of the positive impact of gardening and a great connection to green spaces on mental health and wellbeing.

How to better use a garden to improve wellbeing

Aside from green-fingered tasks, there are a few things you can do to help make your outdoor space even better for health and wellbeing.

Create space to sit and enjoy your garden

It's important to find a place in your garden where you can enjoy it. Where you can sit with a good book and listen to the birds, watch the bees and drink a coffee in peace, connected with the natural world around you.

Grow it yourself

Growing from seed is a great experience for you or a fun way to get children engaged with the joys of gardening. The satisfaction of seeing a seed become a part of your garden is second to none. You can find seeds from Seedball and Kabloom on our website, perfect for wildflower areas in your garden.

Grow your own fruit and veg

Few things are more exciting and rewarding than serving food freshly picked from your own garden, and it's been proven that kids are more adventurous when trying food that they've helped to grow. And, it tastes blooming delicious!

Plant for wildlife

By growing flowers and plants that attract bees and butterflies, your garden will soon become a hive of activity, full of bees, butterflies, and birds. Plants like lavender, rosemary, and sage are great as they're low maintenance and easy to keep. There's lots of tips from RHS award-winning designer Matt Keightley here, to help you to create a feel-good garden.
